The energy label is a reference point, not your household bill.
A washing-machine energy label gives standardized figures that are useful for comparing exact models, but those figures are built around the eco 40–60 reference framework. Energy, water, rated capacity, duration, spin-drying efficiency and spin noise are separate measurements; none of them should be treated as a complete prediction of how the machine will perform or cost to run in your home.

GOV.UK’s current washing-machine energy-label service defines separate fields for:
- energy-efficiency class;
- weighted energy consumption per 100 cycles;
- rated capacity for the eco 40–60 programme;
- weighted water consumption per cycle;
- duration of the eco 40–60 programme at rated capacity;
- spin-drying efficiency class;
- airborne acoustic-noise class and noise value for the spinning phase.
That separation is important.
A machine can have a lower labelled energy figure but a higher labelled water figure. Two machines can have the same rated capacity but different eco-programme durations. A good spin-drying class answers a different question from a good energy class.
Currensci keeps those properties separate rather than hiding them inside one unexplained eco score.
ENERGY ≠ WATER ≠ TIME ≠ SPIN ≠ NOISE
Energy is shown per 100 cycles
The headline energy-consumption number on the current UK label is a weighted figure in kilowatt-hours per 100 cycles.
It is not an annual household bill estimate.
If a label shows 45 kWh / 100 cycles, the arithmetic is:
45 ÷ 100 = 0.45 kWh
That is the weighted label-basis average per cycle represented by the 100-cycle figure. To turn it into a rough electricity-cost estimate, you would still need your own electricity tariff and a realistic estimate of how many comparable cycles you run.
For example, the structure of the calculation is:
label kWh / 100 cycles ÷ 100 × expected cycles × electricity price per kWh
The result is an estimate, not a promise. Your actual programme mix, loads, options and tariff may differ from the standardized label basis.
That is why Currensci will not hardcode a single evergreen annual running cost without showing the tariff, cycle assumption and date behind it.
Water is shown per cycle
The current UK label expresses weighted water consumption in litres per cycle.
The European Commission’s product-information framework makes the limitation explicit: water consumption is based on the eco 40–60 programme and actual consumption can depend on how the appliance is used; its product sheet also notes water hardness as a factor.
The practical implication is straightforward: the label is useful for like-for-like standardized comparison, but it does not mean every programme on the machine uses the same number of litres.
If programme-specific water use matters to a decision, use exact-model documentation where an authoritative comparable value is actually available. If it is not available, leave it unknown rather than guessing from the label figure.
Why eco 40–60 matters
The label is not a generic measurement of every possible wash.
GOV.UK ties rated capacity and programme duration on the washing-machine label to eco 40–60. The current GB ecodesign rules also require household washing machines to provide an eco 40-60 cycle and define performance requirements around that programme.
The related technical framework measures washing-machine performance at defined load points rather than treating all household use as one undifferentiated average. In the EU labelling regulation, for example, the eco 40–60 energy and water framework includes rated, half-rated and quarter-rated load measurements for machines where those load points apply.
This standardized basis is exactly what makes the label useful for comparison.
It is also why the label should not be described as a direct measurement of every programme or every household’s real-world use.
Duration is part of the comparison
The UK label includes the duration of eco 40–60 at rated capacity.
That does not mean shorter is always better or longer is always worse. It means time is a separate fact the buyer can see alongside energy and water.
If two machines have similar efficiency but one takes materially longer on the reference programme, that may matter to one household and not to another.
Currensci does not convert duration into a hidden penalty or bonus. It stays visible as its own requirement.
Spin-drying efficiency answers a different question
The label also includes a spin-drying efficiency class.
The European Commission describes this as drying performance after the spin cycle. In buying terms, this matters because the condition of the laundry after spinning affects what happens next — whether you air-dry it, tumble-dry it or simply care about how wet it is when the wash finishes.
The label does not by itself tell you a universal downstream drying cost, so Currensci does not invent one.
It treats spin outcome as another property that may or may not matter to the buyer.
The noise figure is spin-phase noise
The current UK label’s airborne acoustic-noise value is specifically for the spinning phase.
That is useful if spin noise matters in a kitchen, utility room or open-plan space.
It is not the same thing as a promise about every sound the machine will make during filling, washing, draining or other parts of a cycle.
This is another example of why the measurement context matters as much as the number.
A worked comparison framework
The numbers below are hypothetical. They do not describe real products.

This table does not produce an automatic winner.
Machine A has the lower labelled energy figure. Machine B has the lower labelled water figure and the shorter reference-programme duration.
Which differences matter depends on the buyer’s requirements and usage. The useful analysis is to preserve the trade-offs rather than compressing them into one score.
What to check before buying
- 01Energy consumption per 100 cycles — understand that it is a standardized weighted figure.

- 03Rated capacity — tied to eco 40–60 on the UK label.
- 04Programme duration — so energy/water are not considered without time.
- 05Spin-drying efficiency — if post-wash moisture matters to you.
- 06Spin noise — if the machine will run near living or sleeping space.
- 07Exact model identity — because declared values belong to the exact variant, not merely the family name.
If you turn a label number into pounds per year, show your assumptions. If the tariff or number of cycles changes, the estimate changes too.
The Currensci rule
The useful question is not:
Which washing machine has the best energy letter?
It is:
What do the standardized energy, water, capacity, duration, spin and noise measurements actually tell me — and which of those matter for how I will use the machine?
The label is valuable because it makes several measurements comparable. It becomes less useful when those measurements are collapsed into one vague claim.
How this guide was made
Currensci checked the current GOV.UK washing-machine energy-label fields, current GB ecodesign legislation, European Commission consumer explanations and the underlying technical energy-labelling framework before writing this guide. The article keeps standardized label measurements separate from household-specific estimates and does not use a live electricity or water tariff. Currensci has not physically laboratory-tested the machines represented by the hypothetical example.
